Alan Finkel commences as Chief Scientist

In his first statement as Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel AO said he wants to use his new position to “tell Australia’s great success stories”.

“Some would describe me as a techno-optimist, and it is true that I have every confidence in the ambition and ability of Australians,” the country’s eighth Chief Scientist said.

“I have witnessed many [success stories] firsthand, as a researcher, entrepreneur and advocate. I hope to uncover and help inspire many more.”

Dr Finkel said he looks forward to his new responsibilities as part of the National Innovation and Science Agenda, including chairing the expert group to map long-term research infrastructure needs; contributing to the review of the Research and Development Tax Incentive program; and serving as deputy chair of Science and Innovation Australia.

He also said he wants to “put important topics on the table, such as sustainable energy use, to help Australians understand and weigh up the options”.

“We will count the benefits of innovation in prosperity shared, jobs created, lives saved and opportunities uncovered — but only if we pursue a new conversation,” Dr Finkel said.

Dr Finkel has received the blessing of former Chief Scientist Professor Ian Chubb, who said his successor “comes to the role … with that rare blend of passion, patience and persistence the position demands”.

“Dr Finkel’s appointment is a testament to his great vision for Australia, pursued with energy, insight and imagination over many decades,” Professor Chubb said.

“Dr Finkel has called in recent days for Australian governments to ‘wrap their arms around the future’. As Chief Scientist, he will encourage all of us to embrace a bolder vision of the century ahead.”
