Call for applications to attend Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting
The Australian Academy of Science is inviting applications from early-career researchers, through their institute research office, for a Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF)–Australian Academy of Science Fellowship to participate in the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, dedicated to physiology and medicine.
The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, established in 1951, provide a globally recognised forum for exchange between Nobel Laureates and young scientists. The event is a highly prestigious annual gathering of Nobel Laureates and emerging scientists, inspiring scientific generations and building networks of young scientists around the world.
The 2022 meeting, dedicated to the discipline of chemistry, was recently attended by 12 of Australia’s brightest young scientists, seven of whom were selected to attend the event this year and five of whom attended the virtual 70th meeting in 2021. Led by mathematician and Academy Fellow Emeritus Professor Cheryl Prager, who was joined by renowned quantum physicist and Academy Fellow Emeritus Professor Hans Bachor, the Australian delegation joined 600 other young scientists from all over the world.
The 71st meeting provided an opportunity for the young scientists to share their research, experiences and ideas, and gain inspiration from fellow emerging scientists and Nobel Laureates. The Nobel Laureates shaped the scientific program, and the delegates were given the opportunity to find out more about both the professional and the personal side of the Laureates.
The 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting will be held from 25 to 30 June 2023. Successful candidates for the 2023 SIEF–AAS Fellowships will receive a grant-in-aid from the Academy valued at up to $7500 (GST exclusive) towards the cost of:
- an international return economy airfare from Australia to the international airport closest to Lindau (up to $3500), organised by the Academy;
- the registration fee to participate in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting of EUR2500 (up to $4000), including accommodation from 25 to 30 June.
Prior to the meeting, delegates will have the opportunity to take part in a SIEF Research Innovation Tour, visiting relevant laboratories and businesses in Germany from 20 to 23 June. This year the Academy organised a Research Innovation Tour in Berlin the week before the Lindau meeting, enabling the young researchers to visit the science museum FUTURIUM, laboratories at the Humboldt University and Technical University, and leading companies to learn about research and industry links in Germany and network with counterpart German researchers.
Applications must be submitted online by the research office (or equivalent) for the candidate’s institution. Each institution is limited to submitting applications for up to two candidates. Eligible institutions include Australian universities, Australian publicly funded research organisations and research-focused institutions. The application deadline to the Academy by research offices is 5 pm AEST on 28 September 2022.
