First elected female president of Academy of Science

Monday, 10 May, 2010

Distinguished cancer researcher Professor Suzanne Cory has been elected by her peers as President of the Australian Academy of Science - an institution that has been dominated by male scientists since its formation in 1954. As the first elected female president, she takes over the role from Professor Kurt Lambeck.

The only other female to serve in this position was Professor Dorothy Hill, who stepped into the role when Dr David Martyn died in 1970.

Professor Kurt Lambeck, who has served as President from 2006, officially ‘handed over the gavel’ to Professor Cory. The presidency alternates between the physical and biological sciences and the term lasts for four years.
