NMI seminar on communicating risk in the 21st century
On 17 July, the National Measuring Institute (NMI) will host a seminar on risk perception and management for new technologies. The event will be held from 11 am-noon at NMI’s headquarters in Lindfield, NSW, and will be presented by Professor David Berube and Christopher Cummings.
David Berube teaches graduate seminars in risk communication, hazard communication and social media. He serves on multiple national and international task forces, councils, centres, etc, dealing with science and emerging technologies and the public sphere. Recently he worked with the US Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Branch to train bureaucrats on how to communicate risk to the public and the media. His LLC consults on social media and government and risk communication with academia, government and industry, especially on food and media and risk and technology.
Christopher Cummings is a doctoral candidate in communication who is currently writing a dissertation focused on the potential inhibitory impacts of mixed expert recommendations regarding the safety of nanoformulated sunscreens. He has served as the lead doctoral researcher for the Public Communication of Science and Technology project at North Carolina State University since 2009. He currently serves as the student representative for the Risk Communication Specialty Group of the Society for Risk Analysis as well as on their Social Media communication committee.
