Strong research ties between Australia and France renewed
A renewed memorandum of understanding (MOU), supporting the French–Australian Science and Technology Program (FAST), has been signed by Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, and the French Ambassador, Michel Filhol.
"By renewing this MOU and strengthening the scientific and technological collaboration between our two countries, the potential for future joint breakthroughs is limitless," Senator Carr said.
"So far, FAST funding has supported research that could ultimately lead to a renewable source of hydrogen fuel.
"This work was done by the Australian National University and France's National Centre for Scientific research, who studied the enzyme Photosystem II.
"Other projects funded last year included research into life-threatening cancers, the creation of cheaper nano-biomaterials and modelling the dynamics of renewable resource systems to help combat climate change," Senator Carr said.
FAST is jointly managed by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research and its French counterparts, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.
The Australian component of FAST funding is provided under the International Science Linkages program, which aims to promote and support scientific and technological cooperation between Australian researchers and researchers around the world.
"To date, the FAST program has funded 65 projects. They will improve Australian and French capability in a variety of areas, including bio-medical, agricultural and climate change adaptation research, yielding significant mutual benefits," Senator Carr said.
"Only time will tell what results this renewed agreement will yield, but considering its track record, the sky is the limit."
More details on projects funded under the FAST Program can be accessed at the International Science Linkages website.
