The International Year of Chemistry launched
The International Year of Chemistry 2011 (IYC 2011) aims to highlight the achievements and contributions of chemistry worldwide.
Under the unifying theme ‘Chemistry - Our Life, Our Future', the IYC 2011 will be a global event, with opportunities for public participation at the local, regional, national and international level.
Here in Australia, IYC 2011 will be celebrated with a full program of events, tours, exhibitions and functions spearheaded by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
Officially launching the event, Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr spoke of Australia's contributions in the field of chemistry.
"We are determined to give our chemists the support they need to excel and encourage the next generation to follow in their footsteps. Science and innovation are the key to a strong economy, a healthy environment and a better future for all Australians."
Also speaking at the event, Professor Penny Sackett, Chief Scientist for Australia, said science and technology would play a crucial role in developing solutions to national issues, ranging from the environment to economics.
“This and future generations will face some of the biggest challenges our civilisation has ever seen. Things such as increases in extreme weather events, such as cyclones and bushfires; new, more resistant and ever-evolving diseases; and a growing, hungry population that must be fed on a fixed amount of arable land.”
The role of chemistry in responding to these issues was discussed by national and international science and industry experts at panel sessions held over the two-day event, with topics including Water Management Solutions, Sustainability Innovations, Skills and Education, and the Contributions and Responsibilities of Chemistry.
