Shimadzu has published an application note to illustrate the capabilities of the SALD-7101 particle size analyser to measure the particle size distribution of concentrated conditioner and conditioner diluted in water as specified for normal use.

The role of hair conditioner is to supplement the oil lost during shampooing, to soften and make the hair supple. It also loosens entanglements that occur due to shampooing and acts to suppress static electricity that can occur while brushing the hair, also preventing the adherence of dust. To achieve these effects, cationic surfactants, oils and emulsifiers are blended in as ingredients of hair conditioner.

The note, firstly, reports on the measurement conducted using the typical method of diluting the sample with water and transferring it to a batch cell. Next, it reports on using a high-concentration sample measurement system; the original liquid was measured as is, without dilution. And finally, a comparison of these results is presented.

The application note is available for download at: http://www2.shimadzu.com/applications/Testing%20&%20Inspection%20Machines/Q111.pdf.
