BOC awarded $28.5 million to develop Illawarra Hydrogen Technology Hub
BOC, a Linde company, has announced plans to accelerate the design and development of a Hydrogen Technology Hub in the Illawarra region after being awarded $28.5 million from the NSW Government.
Subject to a final investment decision, BOC plans to develop a hydrogen hub on its existing Port Kembla operations site. The proposed hub will include a 10MW electrolyser powered by renewable energy with capacity to produce approximately four tonnes of green hydrogen per day which could power up to 40 heavy vehicles.
The proposed hydrogen hub signals BOC’s long-term commitment to the Illawarra region, and will leverage its global expertise and existing infrastructure to support NSW as it transitions to net zero.
With support from the NSW Government, BOC will kickstart this important project which aims to drive hydrogen demand for mobility and energy applications in the Illawarra and other parts of NSW.
BOC has been producing hydrogen in Australia for over 80 years with global technology and expertise across the entire hydrogen supply chain, driving the transition to green hydrogen. We anticipate this project will create about 100 jobs and develop new local skills to build and maintain hydrogen infrastructure.
In the long term, the project aims to have a 650 megawatt electrolyser, which can abate 716,514 tonnes of emissions by 2030 by expanding supply to decarbonise steel, glass and cement production in the region. The project is subject to a final investment decision.
