Fluid Air PolarDry electrostatic spray dryer
Fluid Air has developed an electrostatic spray dyer — PolarDry. The concept utilises electrostatic technology that works by driving water/liquid to the outer shell. PolarDry lowers its evaporative temperature, essentially eliminating active ingredient loss, denaturalisation and degradation.
The electrostatic effect works to drive the active ingredient to be microencapsulated by forcing the active ingredient to its core, resulting in good encapsulation efficiency. The product line ranges in various design sizes to accommodate to varying environments — from the tabletop titan (Model 0.1), suitable for small-scale feasibility testing, to the Model 32, a PLC controlled system for a pilot full-scale production lab environment.
The product has a low operating temperature (80°C) when compared to traditional spray drying (200°C). This reduces degradation of molecules and components caused by heat, and should result in higher quality. Regulatory issues around emissions are meanwhile eliminated since process gas is recycled through the company’s nitrogen inerted systems, making it safe.
Each of the PolarDry’s negative pressure chambers contains alarms if the required seal pressure is not met, making the unit dust-free. A centralised collection system collects all finished material; there are no cyclones or dust collectors required and the end product is removed using a sealed conveying system.
Each of the nozzles has been precision machined by Spraying Systems Co to ensure consistent droplets and is backed with extensive technical support and data. The nozzles used on the PolarDry are specifically designed to be suitable for electrostatic spray drying technology.
