Interferons (IFNs) are a family of mammalian cytokines initially characterised by their ability to inhibit viral infection. In addition to their antiviral properties, IFNs have also been shown to exhibit antiproliferative, immunomodulatory and many other activities. IFNs are classified as Type I, II or III based on receptor complex recognition and protein structure.
