Diagnostics company HealthLinx and industry group Dairy Australia have filed a provisional patent for a dairy-derived bioactive compound that has shown weight loss potential in rats.

The compound, LAP001, was identified from fractionated proteins in dairy products. It was found to reduce the production and storage of fat in rat cells.

The activity was confirmed by an independent research institute, HealthLinx said in a statement. Further analysis is being undertaken.

HealthLinx said there was the potential to develop the compound as a nutraceutical.
