UWA Professor named WA's Chief Scientist
The Western Australian government has appointed UWA Professor Peter Klinken as the state’s new Chief Scientist.
Klinken has been active in the Australian biotechnology and medical research sector for decades.
He played a key role in establishing the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, served as the institute’s inaugural director between 1998 and 2000, and returned to the role of director between 2002 and March 2014.
Klinken is also a professor at the UWA’s Centre for Medical Research, and he has previously held positions including director of research at Royal Perth Hospital.
In his new role, Klinken said he aims to help change Western Australia’s research focus. “I hope I can play a role as Chief Scientist in turning Perth into a centre for innovation and creativity that will see us move from our successes in oil and gas mining to creating new industries in biotechnology,” he said.
Western Australian Premier and Science Minister Colin Barnett welcomed the appointment. “The Chief Scientist provides important input to support the government in building the state’s science industries to achieve future prosperity for West Australians,” he said.
“Professor Klinken brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm to the role and I very much look forward to working with him.”
