David Penington to headline AusMedtech Melbourne conference dinner
Emeritus Professor David Penington AC will deliver an insightful address about his experiences within the medical industry and how to translate medical research into products as part of the AusMedtech 2013 conference dinner on Wednesday 15 May 2013.
Professor Penington is described by reviewers of his 2010 autobiography Making Waves: Medicine, Public Health, Universities and Beyond as “one of Australia’s leading public health experts” and “a tireless leader who, at every stage of his working life, has never shunned public controversy in a bid to improve the lives of all Australians”.
Professor Penington has an active involvement in public health policy, often giving media interviews about child obesity and safe drug use. In recognition of his service to medicine and to the community, particularly in the field of medical education and health care, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1988.
Professor Penington currently chairs the Board of Bionic Vision Australia, which is seeking to develop a bionic eye. He has held several other important Chair roles including for the Bio21 Cluster (2003-2009), Neurosciences Victoria (2002-2005), Cerylid (2001-2003), CRC for Cellular Growth Factors (1996-2002), Cochlear (1995-2002), National AIDS Task Force (1983-1987), Victorian Premier’s Drug Advisory Council (1995-1996), Committee on Drugs for Capital City Lord Mayors (1997-1999) and Drug Policy Expert Committee of the Victorian Government (1999-2000).
In addition, Professor Penington has held the positions of Professor of Medicine, Dean and Vice Chancellor at the University of Melbourne, has been a member of Foursight Associates since 1996, and has been a Fellow of Queens since the 1980s.
