Peptech claims dog contraceptive improved
Thursday, 17 February, 2005
Peptech Animal Health, a subsidiary of Peptech (ASX:PTD), has successfully completed trials of a new formulation of its dog contraceptive Suprelorin which suppresses fertility in male dogs for at least 12 months.
The current formulation, which was launched on the Australian market in December, provides contraception for a period of at least six months. The contraceptive works by suppressing testosterone
Peptech Animal Health's managing director Tim Trigg said the new formulation would be advantageous as it would allow owners and veterinarians to time the implantation with other annually scheduled events such as vaccination and heartworm treatment. The six-month implant would continue to be useful for short-term fertility suppression and assessment of behavioural issues caused by testosterone.
The company is preparing to submit an application for approval to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicine Authority and to the New Zealand Food Safety Authority for review, and expects approval in the second half of 2005. Peptech is also preparing to seek approval in Europe and is working to secure approval for further trials in the US.
