The Queensland BioBus is stopping in Gympie this week to encourage more young people to take up a career in science.

"The BioBus is outfitted with 24 interactive and interpretative exhibits showcasing how biotech is used in health, the environment and agriculture," said deputy premier and minister for state development, trade and innovation Anna Bligh in a statement.

BioBus will be located at the Gympie State High School from October 17-21 and will be visited by year 9 to 12 students and teachers as well as members of the local community.

"One of them could be so inspired by the bus that they decide to pursue a career in science and one day discover the cure for cancer," she said.

Bligh said Queensland needed more scientists, particularly in biotechnology, one of the fastest growing sectors in Queensland.

"It is creating new export markets and more jobs for Queenslanders," she said.

"Our world-class scientists have established an excellent reputation in biotechnology, particularly in health and medical research."

The BioBus is part of the Queensland Government's smart state initiative announced in June this year, and is being operated in collaboration with the Queensland Museum and Education Queensland.

It will travel to more than 80 locations and reach more than 20,000 students, teachers and parents by the end of 2006
