SCS, Chemicon launch ES cell products
Thursday, 02 March, 2006
Stem Cell Sciences (AIM:STEM, SCS) and Californian-based Chemicon are set to launch a new product line of culture media for mouse embryonic stem cells.
The launch of the ESGRO Complete product line follows the establishment of an exclusive agreement between the two companies last November.
"Chemicon is very much an international company," said SCS's Melbourne-based scientific development manager Megan Munsie. "That was a big attraction for us -- they have established and reputable distribution networks, and a well recognised and respected name in supplying reagents to researchers."
Chemicon will exclusively market ESGRO Complete Grade Medium, a serum and feeder-free media for mouse embryonic stem cell expansion, as well as other media and reagents needed for routine mouse ES cell culture for use in this serum-free system.
"It's a culture media with a series of factors added to keep embryonic stem cells in their pluripotent state," said Munsie. "It's not reliant on serum or the use of foetal fibroblasts. Generally you buy your base media then you add supplements in house. This is a complete product, everything is in a bottle, and it's ready to use by the researcher."
The product was developed by SCS's SC Proven division.
"We are very excited about the launch of our first cell culture media product," said SCS CEO Peter Mountford. "This will generate revenue streams in the near term and marks a major milestone in our development."
