Sydney biomedical company Sirtex Medical (ASX:SRX) has promoted Gilman Wong from chief operating officer to chief executive officer.

Wong only joined Sirtex in February 2005 but chairman Bruce Gray said that he "has made a substantial contribution to company activities since then."

Wong has a strong background in sales and marketing -- a potentially useful background for Sirtex, whose sales revenue last year grew 8 per cent to $4.9 million, but whose gross profit fell to $3.57 million from $3.6 million in 2003.

Wong has held senior management positions in the manufacturing, engineering and automotive industries.
