Stem cell letter to government published
Tuesday, 02 April, 2002
An open letter to Australia's Federal, State and Territory Governments was published in The Age on Tuesday supporting adult stem cell research and advocating a ban on human embryo experimentation.
The list of signatories included Rev George Pell and Rev Denis Hart, Catholic Archbishops of Sydney and Melbourne, Rev Tim Costello, the President of the Baptist Union of Australia and other religious leaders.
The Prime Minister John Howard has deferred Cabinet's decision until after the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting later this week. Victorian State Premier Steve Bracks has indicated that he would support the research as have NSW's Premier Bob Carr and Queensland's Peter Beattie.
