$10m centre seeks diabetes vaccine
Sunday, 23 March, 2003
The search for a vaccine against juvenile Type-1 diabetes has received a boost with the establishment of a vaccine development centre at the University of Melbourne.
The Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre, believed to be the world's first such public sector facility, will operate from the University of Melbourne's School of Population Health.
The $10 million initiative is a joint venture between Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the New York-based Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.
Head of the University of Melbourne's School of Population Health, Professor Terry Nolan, says locating the centre within the school will create a critical mass of research expertise by helping to foster links with colleagues who have shared interests in illness prevention and key issues in developing vaccination programs.
