2nd Australian Stem Cell Summit
Sunday, 12 January, 2003
The 11th and 12th of March this year see the 2nd Australian Stem Cell Summit taking place at the Carlton Crest Hotel in Melbourne.
With a theme of "legislation, commercialisation, innovation", the Summit aims to bring together members of the Australian and international scientific community to discuss the issues surrounding not only the commercialisation of stem cell technology, but also the ethical issues that have arisen from stem cell research.
Key speakers include the Minister for Health, Senator Kay Patterson; and Professor Alan Pettigrew, CEO of the National Health and Medical Research Council.
The summit will also welcome Dr Glyn Stacey, Head of Stem Cell Biology at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control in the UK. Dr Stacey is heavily involved in the establishment of the UK Stem Cell Bank.
There will also be an interactive post conference workshop entitled "Translating research into business: Understanding commercialisation issues", headed by Dr Lisa Springer of PricewaterhouseCoopers. The workshop will work through the issues that emerge in establishing a biotechnology venture.
