Academy welcomes reappointment of Chief Scientist

The Australian Academy of Science has applauded the reappointment of the Federal Government's Chief Scientist, Dr Robin Batterham, for a further three-year term.

Welcoming the decision, the President of the Academy of Science, Dr Jim Peacock, said, "Robin Batterham has worked exceptionally hard to put science and technology at the forefront of the national agenda. The Academy is delighted that Robin has agreed to continue in the role of Chief Scientist.

"There is still much to be done, as the nation embarks on research priority-setting and the Academy looks forward to working closely with Robin Batterham in this exercise.

"This work will culminate in a strategic Forum on priority setting, to be held on June 26 and 27."

The Forum will be launched with a National Press Club luncheon address by Professor Michael Barber, Secretary, Science Policy, from the Academy of Science, entitled "Research Priorities for Australia: Setting our Future".

Dr Peacock also said, "Dr Batterham is highly regarded by the business and science communities, having a track record as a research scientist in both the public and private sectors."
