Airbags to guard against fall injuries
Monday, 10 July, 2000
Foresight's Ageing Population Panel in the UK is researching inflatable clothing that fills with air to cushion a fall. This is one of a series of projects to improve the lives of the UK's elderly population.
Other ideas include home burglar alarms that become safety alarms when elderly relatives come to stay, and virtual hobby and friendship groups on the internet that use cameras and the TV.
Foresight's research has focused on ways the nation could respond to the growth in the number of people aged over 60. By 2030 this is expected to rise by half to 19 million, with the greatest rise the 70 to 80 year age group.
This approach looks at how science and technology can work with UK business to create products that meet the demands and needs of a generation of people.
