Biomedical facility opens in WA

Wednesday, 30 November, 2005

A biomedical research facility tipped to speed up research into the genetic causes of human diseases has been officially opened.

The facility is a joint venture between The University of Western Australia and the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research.

The facility has technologies and equipment that will enable more rapid identification and testing of genes involved in human diseases.

It will also produce monoclonal antibodies which are used increasingly for diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, including B-cell lymphoma, certain types of breast cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and leukaemia.

It is the first of three planned facilities which will combine to form a platform of excellence for biomedical research in the state. The 3000 m2 flagship facility is at UWA's Shenton Park Field Station.

The Biomedical Research Facility has also opened, introducing an Australian-first sanitation system.

A major feature of the facility is a safer new system of decontamination, using a portable high-pressure hydrogen peroxide unit.
