Biotechnology in the bush

The wide range of views on genetically modified (GM) crops will be aired next week as the 2003 Biotechnology Innovation Festival highlights various aspects of biotechnology in regional Australia from veterinary and medical sciences to pharmacy, agriculture and the environment.

Under the theme 'Biotechnology in the bush working together!', Charles Sturt University (CSU), Wagga Wagga City Council and Biotechnology Australia will join forces for the second successive year to stage the Festival on Friday 9 May and Saturday 10 May at the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre.

Experts from academia and industry will be on hand at the Festival for Riverina high school students as well as members of the wider community who are seeking information about career options and how biotechnology impacts on their lives. There will also be interactive industry displays and practical demonstrations.

"The feedback from the inaugural event last year was tremendous with many of the biotechnology HSC projects closely based on information presented at the Festival", said Dr Heather Cavanagh from the CSU School of Biomedical Sciences.

Also as part of the Festival, the public forum on GM crops will be held at the Wagga Wagga Civic Centre on Friday night, with expert speakers to deliver challenging and informative presentations.

Chairing the evening will be ABC Riverina's Anne Delaney and the forum will conclude with an opportunity for the audience to question the expert panel.

The speakers at the GM forum include: Dr Richard Jefferson, Director of the Centre for the Application of Molecular Biology to International Agriculture (CAMBIA); Rosemary Richards, Executive Director of the Australian Oilseeds Federation and the Australian Bulk Handlers Association; Juliet McFarlane, a member of the Gene Technology Community Consultative Committee; Dr Clare Murphy of the Gene Technology Regulator; and Max Foster, an expert on the economics of biotechnology.
