Bishops support stem cell research
Thursday, 21 March, 2002
New South Wales anglican bishops have joined catholic bishops in supporting stem cell research, as long as it does not destroy human embryos.
They say uniform national laws are necessary to enforce accountability and protect the vulnerable. The bishops are also calling for scientists and medical companies to resist producing cloned human embryos for research.
"I believe that God has given us the mandate to care for creation and for one another," Bishop Robert Forsyth said. "Therefore, human beings have the responsibility to understand and find solutions to diseases. But not at the cost of destroying human embryos, which in a way is sacrificing human life for another end."
