The CSIRO Centre for Environment and Life Sciences, to be opened today, will be a gateway to CSIRO expertise not only in Western Australia but across Australia, says CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Geoff Garrett.

"The Centre will be a focal point where the community, industry, state government and the universities will be able to see what CSIRO has to offer as a strategic ally in tackling important environmental issues in this region.

"The Centre brings together over 300 researchers and many ongoing research projects to incorporate a wide range of CSIRO know-how," says Dr Garrett.

"There will be increasing emphasis on research groups working with government and industry on large issues facing the region. Managing such relationships is often complex and time consuming, but they are extremely worthwhile, rewarding and the way of the future."

The Centre will occupy 11 hectares over a number of sites. CSIRO Divisions involved in the Centre are: Land and Water, Sustainable Ecosystems, Plant Industry, Livestock Industries, Mathematical and Information Sciences, Forestry and Forest Products, Entomology and Marine Research.
