The government has appointed Sue Meek, a former biotechnology advocate, to a regulatory position. The Australian Health Minister, Michael Wooldridge, announced the government's approval of Sue Meek for appointment to the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator.
Meek is the director of the biotechnology division of the Western Australian Department of Commerce and Trade. An Australian Greens candidate, Scott Kinnear, questions the appointment, based on Meek's advocacy of genetic engineering. Liz Cain, the outgoing regulator, supports Meek's appointment.
