International partnership to focus on Asia Pacific health
Wednesday, 29 May, 2002
The UK-based Wellcome Trust has joined several Australian and New Zealand bodies in launching a major new program focusing on health problems of developing countries in South East Asia and the Pacific.
The A$31.8 million scheme will also promote collaborative research and training in these regions with Australia and New Zealand.
The scheme will fund major five year programs that will be judged on their scientific excellence, significance to relevant health problems, high-level training and the complementary nature of research groups.
To encourage new and innovative collaborations, the scheme will have a wide remit to include infectious and non-infectious diseases as well as health service research. Two-way training will also be encouraged.
