Natural movement for false eye
One bio-ceramics company has succeeded where many others have failed " creating a false eye that moves naturally and bears an uncanny resemblance to the real thing.
The bio-ceramic eyes from UK company Ceramisys are different to traditional implants because the eye muscles are re-attached and grow permanently within the ceramic, therefore the false eye moves as a real one does.
In addition to this, the company has developed bone graft substitutes for clients in the United Kingdom and overseas. The bone graft substitute allows the bone to grow within its replica bone structure and heal. Over time, the substitute dissolves and is replaced by natural bone.
Ceramisys recently signed its first agreement for global distribution and its eye products have now been used in numerous successful operations. It is also involved with supplying bone graft substitutes to other European countries and is in negotiations with a number of companies in the Far East who are interested in using the products.
The eye implants - ocupore porous orbital implants " consist only of synthetic, medical-grade hydroxyapatite and have a controlled microstructure designed to support soft tissue ingrowth and are available in a range of convenient sizes. The material is manufactured using a proprietary synthetic process that allows Ceramisys to produce a highly porous fully interconnected, biocompatible ceramic matrix similar in nature to that found in human cancellous bone.
The product provides a macroporous structure that serves as an ideal scaffold allowing rapid and complete soft-tissue penetration throughout the entire implant. The device is permanent and will not resorb. Once integrated the device can easily be drilled and accept a mortility peg if required.
Reprobone is the resorbable, synthetic bone void filler blocks and granules have been specifically designed to provide an optimal environment for the ingrowth of new bone. Reprobone implants have high strength combined with high porosity (80 %) and they are sterile and fully resorbable. With healing times compared to that of autogeneous bone grafts and other synthetic implants, Reprobone provides economy with excellent performance.
Reprobone is the natural alternative to bone grafts, in many cases eliminating the need for a second operation site, reducing blood loss and lowering patient mobility. In other cases Reprobone blocks and granules can be used to fill in defects created by standard graft harvesting.
