Plant functional genomics research
Thursday, 11 October, 2001
An Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics will be established to support the grains industry, the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp, and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Warren Truss, have just announced.
Funding of up to $4 million a year for five years will be provided through the Australian Research Council and the Grains Research and Development Corporation. The centre will apply genomics research to opportunities and issues relevant to Australia's multi-billion dollar grains industry.
Dr Kemp said, "The centre will be a major boost to Australia's research effort. It will establish Australia as a key global player in the important field of plant functional genomics." Mr Truss said: "This is great news for the grains sector and rural Australia. It will help ensure our products retain and improve their international market share."
