UK network of genetic research parks
Tuesday, 19 March, 2002
UK Health Secretary Alan Milburn has announced plans for the first national network of genetic research parks to put the UK at the leading edge of gene therapy.
He said public confidence in genetics, which had been dented by BSE and fears of human reproductive cloning, must be boosted. He told the Genetic and Health Conference in London that the public must be assured the genetics revolution would deliver "real and lasting benefits" for future generations.
Six genetic knowledge parks would be set up in Oxford, Cambridge, London, Manchester and Liverpool combined, Newcastle and Cardiff. Two National Genetic Reference Laboratories will also be built in Salisbury and Manchester under the scheme.
