Victoria's biomedical grants based on merit
Monday, 01 October, 2001
The Bracks government is to award $12.4 million of biomedical research grants, based on merit, Health Minister, John Thwaites, has just said.
Mr Thwaites said the distribution of infrastructure grants to Victoria's 23 biomedical research institutes had become distorted by a history of ad hoc deals. "Rather than basing grants on what each institute has historically received, they will now be based on transparent principles of merit and a proven ability to conduct significant research as judged by the scientific community," Mr Thwaites said.
Professor Nick Saunders, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University and Chair of the National Health & Medical Research Council, said 10 criteria would have to be met to win research infrastructure dollars.
