Institute continues pioneering medical research with $185m redevelopment

The new redeveloped Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) of Medical Research was officially opened today. The WEHI research facility, in Parkville, Victoria, will accommodate the institute’s rapidly expanding research programs in cancer, infectious disease and chronic inflammatory disease.

On 30 April 2012, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service opened the Melbourne Processing Centre - the largest blood processing facility in the Southern Hemisphere. Redesigned from a one-time car factory, the centre now processes all of Victoria’s and Tasmania’s blood; about 1500 blood donations, or 30% of the nation’s blood supply, per day.
